Hi friends! I wanted to talk to you about a project I worked on late last year that has made a huge impact in our home! In late Fall of 2017, I partnered with the folks at Artisan Hardware to design a barn door for our master bedroom. It was such a fun process and the results exceeded my expectations! In this post, I’m going to share the benefits of having a barn door in your home! So, if you’ve been considering one and need an experienced barn door company, keep reading!
First of all, the staff at Artisan Hardware was extremely helpful during the creating process. They first requested measurements of my door casing and opening; you’ll see those measurements below. Previously, we had two skinny French doors that were constantly in the way and I knew a barn door would be the solution. In the meantime, we ended up removing the double doors for easy access to the master bathroom; doing this immediately opened up the space! Here’s a view of our master bathroom (during construction) of the French doors and the space.
I drew up some sketches of the design I wanted, sent them over to Amy and she presented my ideas to the artisans. We discussed options with glass panes, no glass panes and obviously the design. This part of the process was time consuming, but my most favorite! Here’s a rough draft drawing of the door design and their proofs of the two options… One showing three panes above and one without.
We decided to go with the design on the left because it’s a bathroom and we wanted the added privacy of a solid door.
Below, are several images of the barn door in our master bedroom. Not only does the barn door add character to the room, but it aids in separating the bedroom from the bathroom. Additionally, it also keeps the dog from eating the cat food inside the bathroom. This was actually one of the reasons we needed a barn door, because the baby gate to keep her out wasn’t cutting it anymore… Not to mention, super annoying to step over or move all the time! ;)
Installation of the barn door was relatively easy, but did take some trial and error to get it just right and functioning properly. We had to drill sink holes in the back side of the door (where the track hardware goes) to prevent the nuts from hitting the door casing when the door opened and closed.
This was crucial and something we didn’t consider when we were planning our the installation. The other thing we had to do and it may not be the case for every door, but we had to add washers to the backside of the track to make sure the door had plenty of space between the track and door casing. Here’s a visual of what I mean…
These points are important to mention, just in case you run into minor bumps along the way. I thing the reason for these tweaks was due to our door molding being extra thick and wide. This may not be the case for everyone.
Here’s the door installed in our master bedroom… We love it! We told the artisans to paint it the same color as our trims and cabinets… Sherwin Williams Snowbound in a satin finish! It’s an exact match and looks like it was installed when we built our home!
Here’s the view from the inside of the bathroom… We didn’t feel the need to add a inside mount door pull to the inside, because we always have the door cracked open for the cat to come in and out.
We just love the details and the construction of our barn door… Here are some closeup details of the design and the hardware.
We love the hardware we picked! It’s a available on their website here! We love how the barn door looks in the room when it’s fully open. We had plenty of space to the right of the door to hang a few baskets and our favorite scripture, Love Is Patient.
For those of you curious, our wall color in the master bedroom is Silver Strand by Sherwin Williams and the master bathroom is Sea Salt my Sherwin Williams. We had the walls painted in a matte finish… It’s a finish between flat and eggshell, is wipeable and looks great with our satin trim and cabinets.
We removed the hardware from the existing door and plan to add some trim to hide the holes from the hinges. It hasn’t been a huge priority and doesn’t really bother us.
I hope you enjoyed this post of our master bedroom barn door reveal. The benefits of having a barn door in your home can be for so many reasons! I encourage you to check out Artisan Hardware if you are considering one in your home! They were so wonderful and highly experienced!

I really like the barn door! I wish I could read the post it’s to light I can’t see it. Maybe I’ll have to look it up in the computer. Artisan Hardwear is my neighbor. Actually as I’m reading your post I can see their house right in front of me. Small world.

I actually also was wondering if you’d be able to share where you got the scripture frame for love is patient?

Hi there!! LOVE the barn door! Just curious if you have a problem with it hitting the bottom of your wall. I have little kids and have been trying to see if I can have a barn door without damaging the walls from sliding, as I’m sure they will constantly want to use it. :) Thanks!
Alicia says
Hi Jenna… We don’t have a track for the door to slide back and forth; we don’t have much issue with it hitting the wall. Our kids are older and the door remains open most of the time. If you can, I’d suggest installing a track at the base for it to slide easily and avoid wall damage. Hope that helps and thanks for your interest.

Beautiful! Can you tell me where you purchased the blinds. Are they Jute blinds? Thanks.

I’ve been wanting to remodel my home, and I love the idea of a barn door! It was also great that you sketched out ideas of your doors design. I was thinking that I may even take it a step further and use reclaimed barn wood, but what is your opinion on this?
Alicia says
Awesome… Yes, I say go for it! I know of lots of people that have used reclaimed wood to make a barn door!
