Hey friends! Hope you’re enjoying your Summer… Can you believe it’s already July? It’s definitely been a low key one for us! As far as projects go, we haven’t done anything major, which is nice, considering all the ones we did last year! One easy and dramatic update we made a few months ago is the addition of cafe shutters on the lower half of our windows! My goal with our home has always been to enhance the interior with meaningful pieces and charming details. Enhancing our home with cafe shutters from Select Blinds has always been a vision of mine. Ever since I saw my friend, Layla at Lettered Cottage do this in her home, I was sold! It brings such a warmth and charm to each space and the natural light pouring in is wonderful!
We decided to add cafe shutters to the three windows in our living room, as well as the adjoining breakfast nook window. Our existing woven wood shades (also from Select Blinds) were installed a few years ago and cover the full length of the window. The color is called Jute Wheat, from their Designer Series Woven Wood Shades Collection. Adding the cafe shutters didn’t affect this, but added more character to each room.
Since installing these cafe shutters from Select Blinds, I’ve noticed several things I love about them. I can easily open the shutters (up or down) to bring in light, as well as pull the shades up to bring light in through the top of the shutters. This provides privacy, while still bringing in the daylight! Beautiful views of our backyard patio can be seen from the top, which I love… It’s the little things I didn’t think about that make me love this look more!
Another room where I knew these would add character and charm is the master bedroom and bathroom. It really helped to break up the woven woods and our natural wood furniture, which was my vision for this space. See what I mean about seeing out above the shutters? I love that look so much!
Here’s an overall view of our master bedroom with cafe shutters. We chose Birch White, which was a perfect match to our existing window trim. Whether you’re ordering woven woods or shutters, Select Blinds will send samples to help you decide the best color for your home!
I just love how this turned out and the custom feel these cafe shutters bring!
Our master bathroom has a corner tub with a window above. When I was deciding which windows to add cafe shutters to, this one was a must! I couldn’t be happier with the overall look of this space. With the bathroom renovation we did last fall, adding this shutter completed the look!
If you love the look of woven wood shades and cafe shutters together, I hope you found this blog post helpful! Enhancing our home with cafe shutters has been the best project of 2019 to date!

Hi! What color and style of the woven wood shade did you do?

Hi!! I love your look so much and am thinking of something similar in my home. Can you tell me what wooden shade color you used? Thank you!
Alicia says
Hi Maura… Thank you! We used Jute Wheat from the Designer Series woven wood shades collection. I currently have a code for an additional 5% off with Select Blinds. You should see the banner on my blog. Thanks for your interest in our home!

Hey there! We are thinking of doing the woven shades and actually had some samples sent. Jute Wheat was my first choice. Could you please share if you did either of the liners?
Alicia says
Hi Lola… We did not line our Jute Wheat woven wood shades, as most of them faced the back of our house. We back up to trees, so we didn’t feel it necessary. We did use a privacy liner on the upstairs bedroom windows. Hope that helps and don’t forget to use my code, OVNHOME5 for an extra 5% off!

Hi Alicia,
I LOVE the photos of your bedroom! You have inspired me to create the same look in my bedroom. I actually have the same set up with windows on either side of the bed. I would love to know where you purchased the flowery/puffy piece above the bed between the windows, if you wouldn’t mind sharing.
Thank you!
Mary Ellen

Hi Mary Ellen! Thanks for your interest! I purchased the juju hat from juju boutik – here’s their link on IG http://www.instagram.com/jujuboutik
Hope that helps!

I love the look and already have the plantation shutters on the bottom half of the windows. My question is whether I should order the woven shades in a shorter version than the actual window size since they will only be used half way at the most. These woven shades will replace the old pull down shades with the round pull. Our house is 100 years old next year so trying to upgrade my windows now.
Yours is the first I’ve seen with the wovens and plantation shutters used together and thank you so much for posting!
Alicia says
Hi Bobbie! I originally had the woven woods first at full window length. Then, added the cafe shutters a year later. If you are doing both at the same time, I would only order half of a woven and then the cafe shutter.

Charlotte says
Hello,
Did you added light privacy liner? I noticed some of them let sunlight more intense than others.
Thanks,
Charlotte
Alicia says
Hi Charlotte… No, I didn’t add privacy liner to my woven wood shades downstairs. I don’t care for the look of the lining on the exterior of the house. However, we only used lining in the upstairs bedrooms facing the front and side of the house. I like the light that shines through our bedroom in the morning; our bedroom faces the back of the house, which backs up to a bunch of trees. Hope that helps!

Beautiful home! For your café blinds can you please provide more details on the panel configuration and the louver size? I went to select the blinds website and they offered numerous options to customize the cafe blinds—hence was curious on the details you selected. Thanks for the help!
Alicia says
Hi Caitlin! Thanks for your kind words and reaching out! To confirm, you’re asking about the cafe shutters on the lower window. I chose the 2″ louver size to clear my window depth when opening and closing. I would check the depth of your windows to determine what is best for yours. Depending on the width, you may need a t-bar for extra support. I hope that helps and if you needed additional help, please email me at [email protected] – Thanks!
Lori says
Select Blinds has told me they do not do cafe shutters on only half the window. Could you tell me how to order or possibly explain how you ordered so I know what to tell them? Thanks so much!
Alicia says
Hey Lori… I simply measured for half my window and filled out the order form online. I don’t think they knew it was for a cafe shutter. I also used a frame around my shutter, which helped with installation. Let me know if you have any further questions and I’ll see if I can help! Sorry for my delayed response.
Kathryn says
I love the look and immediately followed your footsteps but I would suggest mentioning which options were used for the shutters because if the window framing is selected that will definitely affect the depth and width of the shades. I made the mistake doing this and now I have shades that are too wide and too deep. So I’m curious did you select the window framing?
Alicia says
Hi Kathryn… Thank you for your feedback. At the time, I chose a window framing for my shutters, which required a two-part installation. Framing and shutters require a 3 inch depth, which the website highly suggests measuring before you order. Every window depth is different, so it’s important to look at depth of framing to make sure it works with your windows. I’m a partner with the company and have learned a lot, but I don’t know everything.
Kathryn says
Beautiful home! For the shutters did you have the whole framing added to the window or was the window trim there already? Also is this an inside or mount?
Alicia says
Hi Kathryn… The framing around the shutters is a part of the installation. It was a two-part install and is an inside mount. I no longer have these cafe shutters in my living room, but they still remain in our master bedroom and bathroom. Hope that helps!
